Why can't I use NVMe PCIe/M.2 SSDs for storage? - QNAP QNAP have identified a number of compatibility issues with different brands of NVMe solid state drives (SSDs). In QTS 4.3.4, PCIe form-factor SSDs and PCIe M.2 SSDs installed in 3rd party adapter cards cannot be used to create storage pools and static volumes. For details on SSD usage in QTS 4.3.4, refer to the following table: [SOLVED] - Is it ok to use m.2 in the third slot | Tom's ... another difference, the 2nd slot (middle one) will dis-able two SATA ports with a PCIe M.2 SSD installed in it plus, that heavy metal cover on the 3rd slot (i have the same motherboard) - it's supposed to be a heat sink, but i'm not sure how as it's made of stainless steel which is an insulator, and then that metal cover has about 50% of it covered in about a 1.16th" thick plastic. T440p Third M.2/NGFF slot | NotebookReview Does anyone know if this port is live? Perhaps with some careful soldering (read hot air) we could add the port and allow for two M.2 SSDs or a M.2 ssd on WWAN enabled systems, or even something more exotic like an eGPU. What do you all think? Edit, after further investigation, if it is indeed an M.2/NGFF slot, it would be a B key. m.2 ssd - Newegg.com
So, if you are trying to purchase a new M.2 PCIe SSD and you want it to be as fast as possible, you would want the SSD to use a 3rd-generation PCIe x4 interface with NVMe support. And you would also want the M.2 slot to have a 3rd-generation PCIe x4 interface with NVMe support.
uh, I don't think it supports past 2242, like the other M.2 slot. If I remember correctly, another user put a double-sided 2242 SSD into the 3rd M.2 slot and it fit, barely. Apparently the bracket bulged a bit but the whole thing fit inside the case. Solved: M.2 SSD slot configuration AND using the PCIe x16 ... Many HP MBs only support PCIe in M.2 sockets because the SATA protocol will disable SATA ports. Many HP Mbs only have two or three SATA ports. The M.2 slot will use available lanes on the chipset. 20 maximum PCIe 3.0 lanes are possible on the H370 chipset per Intel specs and 30 HSIO lanes are possible in total. M.2 SSD Slot Compatibility - Forums - CNET (1) Install either an M.2 slot NVMe SSD drive (if you have a newer bios) or, (2) an M.2 type SATA 3 SSD drive which is slower but still many times faster than the existing 2.5 HDD. M.2 - Wikipedia
(x16 , 2*x8 or x8+2*x4) Will installing a PCIe M.2 SSD in the M.2 slot use up x4 lanes, effectively cutting remaining lanes to 12, (where only 4, 8 or 16 can be used for a single GPU) effectively cutting high end performance from a PCIe3.0x16 gfx card down to running x8 lanes (which I saw in some yotube video, might not mean too much, but still ...
